This is a report about The Maori New Year.
Matariki
Matariki is the Maori new year. There are seven stars which represent the seven sisters.
the seven sisters are
- Waiti
- Waita
- Tupu-a-nuku
- Tupu-a-rangi
- Waipuna-a-rangi
- Ururangi
- Matariki
Matariki can mean ‘small eyes’ or ‘eyes of god’.
But some Maori tribes didn’t believe it was Matariki. They believed it was a star called puanga (which is Rigel in Orion). Another word for the group of seven stars is The Pleiades.
I think that Matariki is a wonderful Celebration for Kiwis.
